Talofa, and happy anniversary American Samoa. April 17 is the Centennial Celebration of the raising of the American flag in American Samoa. 5000 people are to take part in a parade at the Tafuna Stadium, and 10,000 are to parade in Fagatogo.

Villages have been practicing for months. The villages have been decorating and beautifying. They have been wrapping utility poles with coconut fronds and placing fresh cut ginger flowers in the fronds.

Practices have been held on the malae (common grassy area in the center of the village) daily. It would appear the whole village has turned out to dance and sing. Even the practices are an incredible sight (and sound.)

Sivas have been performed during the week until almost midnight. They are broadcast on KVZK TV if you prefer.

I didn't have any appropriate photos this week. Bern and Nancy Cassidy shared these beautiful photos to give you an idea of what you might see if you were here for the Flag Day ceremonies.
